Winter Is Coming: Time to Winterize Your Home!

Writer's picture: Homes TwentyOneHomes TwentyOne

As a property manager and realtor, I’ve seen it all—from the cozy warmth of well-maintained homes to the chilly drafts of properties that weren’t prepared for winter’s harsh embrace. As the cold weather rolls in, it's the perfect time to make sure your home is ready for the season. Not only will it keep you comfortable, but it will also help protect your investment and avoid costly repairs down the line. So, let's go over a few essential steps to winterize your home before the first frost hits!

1. Clean Your Gutters

Your gutters may not be the first thing you think of when preparing for winter, but trust me, they are incredibly important. Over the fall, leaves and debris can clog your gutters, preventing water from flowing freely. When ice and snow start to accumulate, clogged gutters can cause ice dams, leading to water damage in your roof or walls. Now is the time to get those gutters cleaned out and ensure that water can flow properly during those winter storms.

2. Check Your HVAC System

We all rely on our HVAC systems to keep us warm during the colder months. If yours hasn’t been serviced in a while, it might be worth scheduling a tune-up with a professional. This is especially important if you have an older system. An HVAC technician can clean filters, check for any necessary repairs, and make sure everything is running efficiently. This not only ensures a cozy home but also helps you avoid the unexpected—and expensive—repair calls in the middle of a cold snap.

3. Winterize Your Hose Bibs

It’s easy to forget about your outdoor hose bibs once the weather cools off, but neglecting them can lead to frozen pipes and a mess you definitely want to avoid. Make sure to disconnect all garden hoses and drain the water from any exterior faucets. If your area gets particularly cold, consider purchasing insulated covers to protect your outdoor faucets from freezing temperatures. Trust me, the small investment is much cheaper than dealing with burst pipes.

4. Seal Drafts and Insulate

Drafts are the worst during the winter! They let all that warm air escape and make your heating system work overtime. Walk around your home and check for any drafts around windows, doors, and other openings. You can seal gaps with weatherstripping or caulking, which will keep your home warmer and lower your energy bills. Adding a little extra insulation in your attic can go a long way in maintaining that comfortable indoor temperature

5. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Winter is when we rely heavily on heaters and fireplaces, so it's especially important to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These small devices are crucial for safety, and replacing the batteries can be the difference between safety and disaster. It's always a good idea to check your detectors at the start of each season to ensure they’re working properly.

6. Prepare for Snow Removal If you live in an area where snow is a regular winter guest, now is the time to get your snow removal gear ready. Check your shovels or snow blowers, stock up on salt, and make sure everything is in good working condition. It's better to be prepared in advance than to scramble when the snow starts piling up.
